Roundup Ready® canola is a herbicide tolerant canola. It has been modified using gene technology to tolerate glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup® agricultural herbicides. Roundup Ready canola enables farmers to safely and effectively manage weeds in their canola crop.
Roundup Ready canola was approved by the Federal Gene Technology Regulator for human health and environmental safety in December 2003, following seven years of development in Australia. However, GM moratoria imposed in the major canola growing states of Australia in 2004 prevent commercial GM canola crops being grown. As a result of the bans, Monsanto stopped its canola R & D program that same year.
In September 2006, Monsanto Australia agreed to licence Roundup Ready canola technology and to sell its Roundup Ready canola germplasm, developed specifically for the Australian market, to Nufarm Limited. This agreement is consistent with Monsanto's global strategy of broadly licensing its technologies to ensure that growers have access to traits in the varieties that best suit their farming needs. Nufarm Limited will produce and market Roundup Ready canola under the “Nuseed” brand.
