The New Affordable Seed Program for Bulk and Bagged Seed Lots

SureSeed® is a quality assurance based seed program that will enable growers and seed companies to produce and market high quality sowing seed of known varietal identity and physical quality; including the testing for nominated seed-borne diseases.

SureSeed® is a joint initiative by Australia’s leading seed certification providers Seed Services Australia and AGWEST Plant Laboratories and is targeted to meet the needs of nationally operating seed companies for an affordable, lower cost alternative to existing seed certification schemes.

SureSeed® is particularly suited to broad acre crop species sold on domestic markets in bulk or bagged lots.

SureSeed® features include:

  • Authorisation and audit of industry personnel to conduct crop inspection and seed sampling activities;
  • Quality assurance documentation and measures to reduce the risk of contamination during processing and handling of seed;
  • Sale of seed in bulk or bagged lots;
  • Sale by SureSeed® seed analysis statement;
  • Use of advanced technologies to verify the quality of seed.

SureSeed® provides integrity by applying:

  • OECD seed scheme principles;
  • International Seed Testing Association Rules;
  • Australian Seed Federation (ASF) National Code of Practice for Seed Labelling and Marketing;
  • Quality assurance risk management principles.

Who can grow SureSeed®?:

Any grower or seed company can produce seed within the SureSeed® program by applying for registration and accepting the rules and conditions. To apply to produce seed of proprietary varieties, a grower must hold a current contract or agreement with the owner of the variety or their agent. Growers will need to provide information such as previous paddock history, sowing seed source and information on adjoining crops.

What varieties can be grown?:

All registered varieties of broadacre crop species can be accepted into the SureSeed® program. Other species will be approved as required.

Selling SureSeed®:

Seed produced within the SureSeed® program must be processed or graded and sampled by trained and authorised persons and may be sold in bulk lots or bags.

SureSeed® must be tested for pure seed content, germination and nominated seed-borne diseases and be sold in accordance with the ASF National Code of Practice for Seed Labelling and Marketing.
